America in the world wars

The industrialization took its course and the Wild West was increasingly developed by the railways and their economic opportunities and numerous immigrants. In 1898, the Spanish-American War took place, after which the victorious US expanded its territory to Puerto Rico and Guam. The Philippines were bought from Spain and occupied Cuba (but received its independence shortly thereafter in 1902).

Panama split from Colombia following US support and granted the Americans the construction and sovereignty of the Panama Canal (which did not return to Panama until 1999).

In the First World War, the US remained neutral for a long time, although they supported the Entente with replenishment deliveries. After the unrestricted U-boat war of the German Reich, however, the United States entered the war in 1917. President Wilson (1856 – 1924) campaigned for peace after his 14-point program and the peoples’ right to self-determination after the war. However, he could not prevail in many ways against the other victors. In 1919, President Wilson received the Nobel Peace Prize.

The US, however, did not join the League of Nations. On October 24, 1929 followed the momentous stock market crash (Black Thursday), which led to the Great Depression. Unemployment rose immensely and millions of Americans suffered from the bad economic conditions. The government under President Franklin Delano Roosevelt (1882-1945) responded with numerous economic and social reforms that went down in history as a New Deal and established the American welfare state. Likewise, the financial markets were re-regulated.

Attempts have also been made to boost the economy by building roads, airports and public facilities. During World War II, the United States initially remained neutral, but entered after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941 in this.

Although the United States was also active in Europe, it had more to do with defeating the Japanese forces in the Pacific. It came to various battles (such as the famous Battle of Midway 1942)
